Background: The prevalence of diabetes is rising globally, and Sub-Saharan Africa is no exception. With diverse health challenges, health authorities in Sub-Saharan Africa and international donors need good data on the epidemiology and public health implications of diabetes in order to plan and prioritise their health programmes. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review of papers published on diabetes in Sub-Saharan Africa 1999-2010 providing data on diabetes prevalence, diabetes outcomes (chronic diabetes complications, infections, and case-fatality), access to diabetes diagnosis and care, and economic burden caused by diabetes. Results: Type II diabetes accounts for well over 90% of diabetes in Sub-Saharan Africa, and prevalence proportions range from 1% of the population in rural Cameroon to 18% in
